About University Of Ghana Dental School

Established in 1991, the University of Ghana Dental School runs a five (5) year programme leading to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. It started as a department of the Medical School in 1974. Prior to its establishment, dental students had their Basic Science training at the Medical School before proceeding to undertake the clinical aspects of the programme abroad. The Academic department at inception in the 1992/1993 Academic year was the Department Basic Dental Science. During the 1994/1995 Academic year, the Academic Board gave approval for the commencement of clinical training with the following foundation departments:
Basic Dental Science
Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine
Restorative Dentistry
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Orthodontics and Pedodontics
Community and Preventive Dentistry
Currently, dental students still pursue the Basic Science course at the Medical School, leading to the BSc. (Med. Sci.) degree before proceeding to the Dental School for the clinical part of the programme. In the 1999/2000 Academic Year, the Dental School was granted faculty status within the College of Health Sciences with the Academic Departments below:
Biomaterial Dental sciences
Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine
Restorative dentistry
Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
Orthodontics and Pedodontics
Community and Preventive Dentistry
Dental School is thus a constituent part of the College of Health Sciences, which groups together all the health related institution within the University of Ghana, under a common administrative system.
