To further improve the partnership between training institutions under the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University has advanced plans to nurture some health training institutions to run top-up degree programmes for diploma holders. Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, Vice-Chancellor, revealed this at this year’s graduation ceremony for MoH health training institutions held at KNUST. He explained that the aim of KNUST in this collaboration was to ensure that middle-level health care providers had the requisite knowhow to handle their clients with minimal supervision.
Professor Obiri-Danso noted that upgrading certificate MoH staff into diploma and finally to degree holders was very critical. He explained, “Often these certificate holders are posted to very remote parts of the country where they virtually work under no supervision.” He appealed to the nurses to accept postings to rural areas and to discharge their duties with utmost care, respect and professionalism
In all, seven thousand and forty five (7,045) students from 36 different institutions across the nation as well as the first batch of students from two specialised institutions – the Physiotherapy and Orthotics Training School and the Brother Tarcicius Prosthetic and Orthotics Training College – graduated this year.
The KNUST-MoH partnership dates back to three years ago when a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between KNUST and the Ministry of Health. By the agreement, all nursing training colleges, midwifery training schools, community health training colleges, environmental health training colleges and the specialised training institutions in the Ministry of Health have been placed under the able academic mentorship of KNUST.
